Desertec is a global consortium of engineering firms, banks, utilities and renewable energy companies who have the audacious vision to provide 15% of Western Europe’s energy needs from renewable energy.  It aims to connect massive concentrated solar plants in Northern Africa to each other and the European market through high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power lines. Desertec demonstrates a way to provide climate protection, energy security and development by generating sustainable power from the sites where renewable sources of energy are at their most abundant.
