Gujurat.jpg

Size: 1 Gigawatt; 105 billion Rupees (US$ 2.3 Billion)

Completion Date: December, 2013

Description:

Currently the world’s largest solar park, the Gujarat Solar Park began producing electricity on April 19, 2012.  Spread over 3,000 acres of desert, the park in northeast India will reduce carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere to the tune of 8 million tons and save around 900,000 tons of coal and natural gas per year.  The park is a direct result of the Gujarat State’s Solar Power Policy, which is designed to create more than 30,000 jobs in the region. This project is awesome because it shows how India can avoid building all sorts of coal and nuclear power plants, and leapfrog straight into the new green economy.
